trytone

Foundation Trytone was founded in 1998 by several musicians as a platform for new jazz and improvised music. The artistic staff currently consists of Edwin Wieringa, Tobias Klein and Marcos Baggiani. The most important activities of Trytone are

1 — a concert series at Zaal 100, Amsterdam
TryTone organises this series twice a month for three bands a night at Zaal 100, a small alternative theater in Amsterdam. The series has a laboratory function and operates on a really small budget. Young musicians make a name and build an audience, and well-known musicians experiment and do try-outs of new repertoire.

2 — the TryTone Dubbelplus concerten

A Dutch ensemble and aan ensemble from outside of the Netherlands meet on stage. They each play one set and then present a third set which they have prepared in the days before.

3 — the Trytone record label
Trytone manages a label and also does distribution for several other labels.
There have been 40 releases so far.

Apart from these activities, Trytone serves as a source of information about all kinds of matters concerning jazz and impro. Trytone receives funding from the city of Amsterdam.

Jazztopad Festival

Jazztopad Festival
The idea to establish the festival appeared in 2004. Since then, Jazztopd festival has focused on blending jazz with clasical music and presenting concerts that are not usually put into the regular jazz clubs. Jazztpad is placed under the umbrella of Wroclaw Philharmonic and most of the concerts take place in the philharmonic hall. For the last four years, in the month of November, the festival has showecased Polish and international jazz artists. It’s 5th edition, which opens on the 8th of November will feature Kenny Wheeler, Joanna MacGregor, John Taylor, Andy Sheppard, Lutosławski Quartet and much more. Apart from inviting great and wildly appreciated musician, Jazztopad also want to put emphesis on young and up-and-coming musicians and bands. The first step to do that is cooperation with jazzwerkruhr.

This year, one of the new features will be a commisioned piece especially for Jazztopad. A young Polish composer Piotr Damasiewicz will present a composition combining chamber orchestra with five jazz improvisers.

jazzlabseries

JazzLab Series is a unique initiative to bring Belgian jazz to a larger, appreciative audience. As an autonomous non-profit organisation, JazzLab Series stimulates every cultural centre and art centre in Flanders and the Brussels Region to organise jazz concerts in the best possible circumstances. We now have more than twenty loyal partners assisting in realising our mission of promoting Belgian jazz.

Every year the concert circuit set up by JazzLab Series offers its partners a series of 9 tours by Belgian jazz bands, totalling in more than 100 concerts every year. These concerts always take place in most favourable, expert sound and lighting conditions, with a grand piano. They are supported by a first-rate promotional and press campaign.

In selecting musicians and bands for these tours, we aim at giving young talent on the Belgian jazz scene the chance to play at large, professional venues. Every band that plays in the JazzLab circuit plays approximately 10-12 concerts before an attentive audience.

Maintaining these high standards for fifteen years now, JazzLab Series has become the largest organisation that offers high-profile Belgian jazz concerts all over Flanders and in Brussels.

Since 2006 we are taking our working method/mission/across the frontiers, as part of the exchange project JazzUnlimited. JazzUnlimited forged links to theNorth of France and brings French bands to Belgian stages and vice versa. In order to generate maximum coverage for our young (and slightly older) Belgian jazz talent, we now are very happy to be part of the European jazzplayseurope network that takes this initiative one step further.

jazzwerkruhr

A platform for presentation – Venues and partner organisations/collaborators

Every year, jazzwerkruhr operates a targeted media campaign, organises press conferences multi media promotion and tours the Ruhrgebiet with its sponsored projects. Through five concerts, jazzwerkruhr’s excellent musicians have the chance to present the fruits of their labour to a broader audience. Since 2005, jazzwerkruhr has secured a more far-reaching exposure of its projects by contracting the WDR Köln as its cultural and media partner/collaborator. jazzwerkruhr’s track record of the last six years speaks for itself, for the selected musicians, and for the Ruhrgebiet as a jazz region worthy of note: Since 2002, jazz-werkruhr has awarded sponsorship to more than 120 musicians and 25 projects. At the same time, the number of venues and partner organisations has increased from two to five:

since 2002: Dortmund (domicil) and Essen (Katakomben-Theater)
since 2005: Bochum (Jazzfest Bochum)
since 2006: Hagen (Kulturzentrum Pelmke)
2007: Gelsenkirchen (Wissenschaftspark [science park]‘ Gelsenkirchen)
seit 2008: GEjazzt e.V. and Consol Theater

Profile and aims
In 2002, host organisations ProJazz e.V. Dortmund and J.O.E. – JazzOffensiveEssen e.V., together with Essen’s and Dortmund’s councils’ cultural departments, founded jazzwerkruhr, a project for cooperation and development within the Ruhrgebiet’s communities. jazzwerkruhr sees itself as a quality audit and a platform for networking and presenting the Ruhrgebiet’s contemporary jazz scene. As a project that emerged out of the “swingbeats – Jazz Podium Ruhr 1999/2000”, jazzwerkruhr aims at reinforcing the Ruhrgebiet’s regional jazz scene through specifically targeted support, presenting across the Ruhrgebiet’s towns and cities. Its goal is to propel and incentivise the Ruhrgebiet’s process of establishing its independent and groundbreaking jazz scene.

Qualifying forum – The subsidization programme
Every year, jazzwerkruhr puts out a public tender for the Ruhrgebiet’s resident musicians. For the 3–4 projects jazzwerkruhr sponsors, eligibility criteria are: a superior musical and artistic standard, innovative artistic energy, originality and a flexible approach to diverging artistic styles. The projects also require a realistic perspective in order to plan for long-term prospects. jazzwerkruhr’s promotional scheme consists of financial and planning support for inventive projects – e.g. CD production, workshops, or artists in residence. The support is customised to individual projects. It will always be devised together with the musicians and agreed on in writing, in form of a contract. Since its beginnings, jazzwerkruhr has promoted improvisation and jazz in schools in a facilitating and representative role: The school project “jazzwerkruhr macht Schule” (“jazzwerkruhr sets a precedent”, literally: “jazzwerkruhr makes (a) school”) is an integral part of jazzwerkruhr’s annual activities.

Network & board of trustee
In its networking function jazzwerkruhr links its projects with local music initiatives, artistic venues, the music industry, the media, and educational facilities as well as urban and communal institutions. The board of trustees forms an independent panel, which is made up of representatives from all of these diverse backgrounds. They are responsible for the content and the support of this project, which is unique to the Ruhrgebiet. They are:

Klaus Wallmeier (ProJazz e.V.)
Simon Camatta (J.O.E. e.V.),
Martin Theurer (B.itte Jazz e.V.)
Waldo Riedl (domicil Dortmund)
Johannes Brackmann (Grend Kulturzentrum Essen)

Dem Ruhrjazz eine Stimme in Europa geben

NRZ – 09.12.2008

MUSIK.
Eintritt: 12/10 Euro.
